J. Leigh Events and OneBlood present You Are Somebody’s Type, an inaugural Blood and Platelet Drive for saving lives. We’re hosting this life-saving event during the last two weeks of February in honor of my son, Henry. On February 14, 2021, Henry was born with lots of love - and a condition called Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT).
First, what is neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia? Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT) is a blood-related disease affecting newborns and mothers. When a mother’s and baby’s blood platelets do not match, it can cause life-threatening issues, including bleeding in the baby’s brain.
As a mother, I can’t explain how scary it is to learn your baby has any issues at birth, especially a life-threatening blood disease. I know other people experience these difficult moments, and the first thing you ask yourself is, “How can I save my loved one?”. Often, there is nothing you can do but hope the doctors and nurses have the resources they need. And, for a blood disease like NAIT, hope comes when the hospital has lots of blood donations to save your baby’s life.
In Henry’s case, we received a blessing through the donated blood in his blood type that saved him. Now, we’re asking others to save lives by donating blood - because you’re somebody’s type.
